The City of Cape Town has officially announced a 12-hour water shutdown in several neighbourhoods due to essential maintenance activities.
These disruptions are part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure improvements to enhance water reliability and service delivery.
Areas in Cape Town Affected by Water Disruptions
Wynberg
Planned maintenance will occur in parts of Wynberg on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, from 08:00 to 20:30.
This shutdown will allow the maintenance team to install valves and make vital connections to the existing water main.
The work will take place at the intersections of Lindley and Bower Road in Wynberg.
Residents within the boundaries of Alphen Hill Road, Bower Road, Wellington Avenue, Bayview Road, Silverlea Road, Constantia Main Road, and surrounding streets may experience low water pressure or complete water outages during this time.
Fish Hoek
Fish Hoek will face a similar disruption on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, from 08:30 to 20:30.
The City’s maintenance team will be installing valves and connecting infrastructure in the area.
Streets expected to be affected include Harrington Street, Arthur Wright Road, Castleman Road, Carmichael Road, and neighbouring locations.
Water pressure may drop significantly or be unavailable for most of the scheduled maintenance window.
Paarden Eiland
A more prolonged disruption is scheduled for Friday, 13 June at 18:00 through Sunday, 15 June at 24:00 in Paarden Eiland.
This extended shutdown is to facilitate the replacement of a 915mm bulk water meter at the Paarden Eiland Transfer Pump Station.
During this time, various parts of Paarden Eiland will either experience low water pressure or a complete absence of water.
Annual Maintenance Begins on Reservoirs
Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant
The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will undergo essential maintenance from 00:00 on Monday, 9 June until 24:00 on Tuesday, 10 June.
Residents are advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of this shutdown to ensure they have enough supply during the downtime.
Oranjezicht Reservoir
The annual cleaning of the Oranjezicht Reservoir is scheduled from Monday, 16 June to Monday, 11 July.
During this time, the water supply will be rerouted from the Tygerberg Reservoir to serve the Oranjezicht supply areas.
This rerouting ensures that affected neighbourhoods still receive water while cleaning is in progress.
Long-Term Investigations for Pressure Improvements
The City has also announced an extended investigation project to address low water pressure in the following areas:
- Hanover Park
- Athlone
- Rylands
- Newfields
- Pinati Estate
- Belthorn Estate
- Penlyn Estate
- Belgravia
The project will begin on 9 June and is expected to run for approximately five months.
Work will be conducted on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00, and intermittent water pressure disruptions should be expected as testing and adjustments take place.
How Residents Can Prepare
Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to:
- Store sufficient water for domestic use ahead of the planned shutdowns.
- Ensure containers used for water storage are clean and covered.
- Avoid unnecessary water use during the disruption period.
