Tech entrepreneur and billionaire investor Mark Cuban has pushed back against claims that artificial intelligence will wipe out a large portion of entry-level jobs.
In a recent post on the social platform Bluesky, Cuban responded to comments made by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who predicted that AI could eliminate 50% of all entry-level office jobs.
Cuban disagrees, stating that AI will instead foster innovation, spark the rise of new companies, and ultimately increase total employment.
Anthropic CEO Warns of AI Job Disruption
In an interview with Axios, Dario Amodei expressed concern about the potential scale of disruption caused by AI.
He suggested that within the next one to five years, unemployment could surge by 10% to 20% due to AI replacing human roles in fields such as finance, law, and consulting.
“Most of them are unaware that this is about to happen,” Amodei said.
“It sounds crazy, and people just don’t believe it.”
He urged both AI companies and governments to stop “sugar-coating” the reality of AI’s effects on employment.
Cuban Says History Tells a Different Story
In response to Amodei’s comments, Cuban pointed to historical trends in employment to back his argument.
“Someone needs to remind the CEO that at one point there were more than 2 million secretaries,” Cuban wrote.
“There were also separate employees to do in-office dictation. They were the original white-collar displacements.”
He added, “New companies with new jobs will come from AI and increase TOTAL employment.”
AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement
This isn’t the first time Cuban has spoken out against fears of AI leading to mass job losses.
In a December interview with Business Insider, he explained that AI’s impact on a company’s workforce would vary depending on how effectively the technology is implemented.
“Every company is different,” he said.
During a March episode of the “YMH” podcast, Cuban argued that AI would never fully replace creative roles.
“AI is not going to, you know, hit your bank account and produce a movie for you, produce a podcast or whatever,” he said.
In a follow-up interview with Business Insider, Cuban clarified that AI should be viewed as a creative assistant rather than a decision-maker.
“I’ve seen companies that use analytics to determine what a studio or label should release fail time after time,” he said.
“That’s the same as using AI to replace everyone. It may be a novelty. But it won’t work.”
