Wing’s drones can carry up to five pounds, allowing them to deliver about half of the 120,000 items typically available at a Walmart Supercenter.
Millions of households across the U.S. will soon get access to this innovative delivery option as Walmart and Wing announce a major expansion of their drone delivery service.
The new rollout will bring drone delivery to 100 additional Walmart stores across metro areas in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa.
This expansion also includes an increase in coverage within the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where the service has been active for over a year and a half.
Popular Items Delivered by Wing’s Drones
Thousands of customers are already using Wing’s service weekly to order everyday essentials that they need quickly.
Some of the most commonly ordered items include baby wipes and eggs.
Wing’s CEO, Adam Woodworth, explained why baby wipes top the list: running out of them creates an immediate problem for families.
Eggs are popular partly because customers are testing the drones’ ability to deliver fragile items intact.
“If you can get eggs delivered and they show up and they’re not cracked, you can get pretty much anything delivered,” Woodworth said.
Fast and Convenient Delivery
Wing’s drones typically complete deliveries in under 19 minutes.
The company aims to reduce this time to around 15 minutes, making drone delivery a faster option than driving to the store for many quick needs.
Woodworth described this convenience perfectly: “You’re cooking dinner and you realize that the recipe called for scallions and you forgot to get them at the store.”
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon even shared how he once used the service to order last-minute cooking wine without leaving his couch.
Limitations and Payload Capacity
While Wing’s drones can carry many items, there are some weight restrictions.
For example, they cannot carry a gallon of milk, which weighs about eight pounds, but they can deliver a quart-sized container to help customers through short-term needs.
The drones’ payload capacity allows them to cover roughly half of the products found in a Walmart Supercenter, providing broad utility for household essentials and groceries.
Community Acceptance and Safety
Despite the convenience, some Americans remain wary of drones flying overhead.
Incidents of hostility toward drones have occurred, including illegal shootings.
To address these concerns, Wing conducts community demonstrations to build trust and familiarity with drone delivery technology.
Woodworth noted that initial reactions tend to be negative but gradually shift toward curiosity and excitement.
“The questions go from the negative to ‘Okay, well, when is it going to come to my house?’” he said.
Looking Ahead
This large-scale expansion represents a significant step toward making drone delivery a mainstream option for grocery and household item shopping.
As more customers gain access, the speed, convenience, and reliability of drone delivery are likely to drive greater adoption.
Walmart and Wing’s partnership continues to push the boundaries of retail convenience and innovation in the years to come.
