Chief Ayedun Ifadare Owodunni, the renowned Agbotifayo and founder of the Agbotifayo Empire, has called on Yoruba sons and daughters to cherish and preserve their cultural and spiritual heritage.
He explained that neglecting these traditions is like disconnecting a river from its source, stressing the importance of remaining connected to ancestral roots.
Importance of Traditional Deities
Speaking on Wednesday in Isara Remo during the annual Ifa sacrifice commemorating the 2025 Isese Day celebration, Chief Owodunni emphasized:
- Every Yoruba family has one or more traditional deities.
- These deities have historically provided support and guidance both at home and in the diaspora.
- Ignoring or abandoning cultural practices weakens the connection to one’s spiritual and cultural foundation.
Commendation for Ogun State Governor
The Chief Priest praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for officially recognizing African traditional religion by declaring August 20 as a public holiday for Isese Day.
He described the move as a positive step, noting that traditional worshippers had long been marginalized, while Christianity and Islam were recognized through public holidays.
“We are grateful that we now have our annual holiday on August 20. Before this, only the other two religions enjoyed official recognition,” he said.
Call for Further Support
Chief Owodunni also urged Governor Abiodun to further strengthen the institutionalization of traditional worship, aiming to enhance its recognition and practice across Ogun State.

In closing, he offered prayers for peace, growth, and development in both Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
