Nigeria Denies Empty Booth at TICAD9 Conference in Japan

The Presidency has rejected reports suggesting that Nigeria had an “empty booth” at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan.

In a statement on Wednesday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s delegation is in Yokohama to engage in strategic discussions, not to operate a trade exhibition.

Onanuga emphasized that the delegation is prioritizing results in crucial sectors, including power, industry, and agriculture.

Social Media Criticism Addressed

Recent viral photos showing an empty space labelled “Nigeria” on social media triggered public criticism.

Reports Described as Misleading

Onanuga dismissed these reports as misleading, explaining that Nigeria is not participating as a trade exhibitor.

Patriotism or Misunderstanding

While acknowledging that some concerns may stem from patriotic sentiments, Onanuga noted that they reflect a misunderstanding of Nigeria’s objectives at TICAD9.

Building Strategic Partnerships

He highlighted that the main purpose of Nigeria’s presence at the triennial conference is to foster bilateral and multilateral partnerships that can stimulate economic growth and development.

NACCIMA to Host Investment Forum

Onanuga also revealed that the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) will host a special investment forum on Thursday during the event.
