Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Usman Yusuf, has accused state governors of failing to tell President Bola Tinubu the truth about the level of hunger in the country.
Yusuf stressed that the majority of Nigeria’s problems are caused by governors, who he claimed control funds but fail to use them for the people’s welfare.
Governors Have More Funds Under Tinubu
In an interview with Trust TV, Yusuf argued that state governors now have more financial resources under Tinubu’s government following the removal of fuel subsidy.
However, he said these funds are not being used to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“There Is Hunger in the Land” – Yusuf
Addressing President Tinubu directly, Yusuf said the reality across the country is hunger, and contrary to what governors report, citizens are suffering.
He questioned the government’s claim of spending N419 billion on conditional cash transfers, asking who truly benefitted from the program.
Accusation of Misuse of Public Funds
Yusuf further alleged that governors spend resources on foreign travels and investments abroad instead of addressing local needs.
He said while people are dying of hunger, leaders are busy “building bridges and houses around the world.”
Governors, Not Presidency, Responsible for Local Development
Yusuf emphasized that state governments, not the central government, are primarily responsible for creating jobs, building schools, and providing healthcare at the grassroots.
He accused governors of stifling local governments and withholding funds that should drive development.
Call for Transparency and Accountability
The former NHIS boss urged Tinubu to be aware of the reality and not rely on governors’ assurances.
He insisted that citizens and civil voices would continue to speak out to awaken the conscience of the nation and the international community.
