The Abuja-Kaduna passenger train derailed on Tuesday morning between Kubwa station and Asham station.
According to the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), the incident occurred around 11:09 a.m. but no casualties were recorded.
Ex-Senator Reacts to the Incident
Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, reacted to the incident by blaming negligence on the part of the authorities.
Posting on X, he said the derailment was a direct consequence of ignored warnings from passengers.
Complaints Ignored by Authorities
Sani noted that passengers had for months raised concerns about the state of the railway but their complaints were repeatedly ignored.
He warned that the expansive bushland between Abuja and Kaduna should not be treated lightly.
NRC Confirms Incident
A statement issued by NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment but assured that no lives were lost.
He explained that operations were being reviewed to prevent a recurrence.
Call for Urgent Attention
Sani stressed that the derailment could have been avoided if authorities had responded to earlier warnings.
He urged the government and railway operators to prioritize safety to protect commuters on the Abuja-Kaduna route.
