Sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday that Ty Simpson will begin the 2025 season as Alabama’s starting quarterback.
The decision was communicated to Simpson and his teammates during a meeting on Monday.
Coaches Confirm Simpson’s Role Throughout Summer
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb had repeatedly stated this summer that Simpson would be the starter if the team played at that time.
Simpson enters his fourth year at Alabama and has served as the backup quarterback for the past two seasons.
Quarterback Competition Included Austin Mack and Keelon Russell
Simpson secured the starting position over redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell, who were also competing for the role.
Preseason Scrimmage Showcases Simpson’s Command of Offense
During Alabama’s first preseason scrimmage last Saturday, all three quarterbacks performed well, but sources told ESPN Simpson showed the best command of the offense and appeared most comfortable on the field.
Simpson’s Previous Game Experience Highlights Potential
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 208 pounds, Simpson has yet to start a game for Alabama.
His most significant playing time was two years ago in a road game against South Florida, where he entered in the second quarter and led Alabama to score 17 unanswered points, securing a 17-3 victory.
In that game, Simpson completed 5 of 9 passes for 73 yards and scored a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Past Quarterback Battles and Season Details
Simpson previously competed with Jalen Milroe for the starting job in 2023. Milroe initially won the spot but was benched in the South Florida game, where Simpson and Tyler Buchner split playing time.
Milroe then reclaimed the starting position for the remainder of 2023 and continued as starter in 2024.
Simpson’s Recruiting Background and Family Ties
Simpson was ranked as ESPN’s No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class.
He chose Alabama over Clemson and Tennessee. His father, Jason Simpson, is the head coach at UT Martin.
