ASUU mobilizes members for nationwide rally in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced the mobilization of its members across Nigeria for a nationwide rally scheduled to hold on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

Rally Announced at Press Conference

The development was disclosed by the union’s Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Oyebisi Egbedokun, during a press conference at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti on Monday.

Aim of the Protest

Egbedokun explained that the rallies are part of ASUU’s renewed efforts to compel the Federal Government to address its long-standing demands.

He stressed that the demonstrations are the union’s first decisive response to the government’s persistent inaction.

Warning to Federal Government

The union warned that the nationwide rallies serve as a signal of tougher actions that could follow if the government fails to respond promptly.

Egbedokun noted that the rallies would hold simultaneously across universities in the country, and academic activities would be suspended during the protest.

NEC Issues Deadline to Government

According to him, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) has given the government until August 28, 2025, to meet its demands before deciding on the next course of action.

Patience Running Out

Egbedokun emphasized that the union had exercised restraint for more than two years by relying on dialogue instead of strikes.

However, he warned that ASUU’s patience has now reached its limit.

Possible Strike Action

“If the government continues to toy with the future of our universities, then it must be ready to bear the consequences of the storm that will follow,” Egbedokun cautioned.
