Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay passed away on the morning of August 11, 2025, in Bogotá, more than two months after being shot by a hired gunman.
His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed his death in an emotional message on Instagram, thanking him for his love, fatherhood, and guidance, and asking God for strength to live without him.
Early Life and Family Background
Born on January 28, 1986, in Bogotá, Uribe Turbay was the son of businessman Miguel Uribe and journalist Diana Turbay, who was murdered in 1991 after being kidnapped under orders from drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Coming from a Maronite Catholic family, Uribe Turbay pursued a career in public service and politics.
Political Career and Presidential Prospects
Before entering the Senate in 2022 as a member of the Democratic Center — led by former President Álvaro Uribe — Uribe Turbay held several public positions.
He was considered a strong contender for the 2026 presidential elections.
The Attack in Fontibón
On June 7, 2025, while campaigning in Fontibón, west of Bogotá, Uribe Turbay was shot in an attack that left him in critical condition.
He remained hospitalized at the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital until his death.
