South African distance runner William Kaptein is on the verge of losing his landmark Two Oceans Half-Marathon victory after testing positive for a banned substance earlier this year.
SAIDS Confirms Positive Test and Suspension
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed that Kaptein, 32, tested positive for cannabis following the April race and was given a one-month suspension.
First South African Winner in Over Two Decades
Kaptein made history by becoming the first South African since 1998 to win the Two Oceans Half-Marathon, completing the shortened 20.6km course in 64:41 and narrowly beating national half-marathon champion Bennett Seloyi by just two seconds.
Cannabis Ban Under WADA Rules
Although cannabis is legal for private use in South Africa, it remains prohibited during competition under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) 2025 Prohibited List. The detection of THC, cannabis’s psychoactive component, constitutes a rule violation during an event.
Athlete Says Hookah Was Spiked
In a statement posted on Facebook, Kaptein claimed he unknowingly consumed cannabis two nights before the race.
“Two nights before my race, I smoked hookah at a party, but I later learned it had been spiked with weed without my knowledge. I never imagined this could happen,” he said.
Reduction of Suspension
Initially given a three-month ban, Kaptein’s suspension was reduced to one month after he completed a SAIDS-approved substance abuse treatment programme — similar to the case of Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada following his positive cocaine test.
Cannabis Not Performance-Enhancing but Still Penalized
While cannabis is not classified as performance-enhancing, its presence during competition still attracts sanctions under global anti-doping rules.
Athlete Determined to Return Stronger
Kaptein, now back in competition, said the experience has been a wake-up call.
“I’ve learned my lesson and am ready to move forward. Next year, I’ll be back for that race again.”
Disqualification Decision Pending
Neither SAIDS nor Athletics South Africa (ASA) has officially confirmed whether Kaptein’s win will be annulled. However, if standard protocol is applied, his victory is expected to be voided.
Appeals Process to End Soon
ASA stated that the appeals period closes on Tuesday, 19 August, after which they will release the official final results.
