Decades after retiring from the NFL and MLB, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders continues to capture attention as one of the greatest multi-sport athletes of his generation. With a career spanning professional sports, NFL commentary, and now college football coaching, Sanders has mastered building a lasting personal brand.
The Colorado Buffaloes head coach — and father of five, including two NFL players — is now passing his wisdom to the next generation of athletes.
Choosing the Right College in the NIL Era
College sports have transformed into a billion-dollar business, with players securing massive NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. But Sanders cautions athletes against chasing money alone when picking schools.
“I would attend a university based on staff, location, and opportunities for growth — not just finances,” he said.
Financial Discipline is Key
Sanders has seen many young athletes blow early fortunes on luxury lifestyles instead of securing long-term wealth.
“Get your butt on one of these airlines. You don’t need a private plane everywhere,” he advised. “Focus on your needs, not your wants, because your wants will get you in trouble.”
Health Comes First
At 58, Sanders has faced serious health battles, including a bladder cancer diagnosis earlier this year. Now cancer-free after surgery, he makes health a daily priority.
He walks after practice, eats more protein and fiber, and avoids unhealthy foods he once indulged in before games.
“Walking daily keeps me in shape and focused,” he said.
Avoiding Stress and Distractions
For Sanders, protecting peace of mind is just as important as physical health.
“I don’t allow fools or foolishness in my life. I eliminate anything that brings stress,” he said.
He admitted learning these lessons the hard way after impulsive choices in his youth, including marrying too early.
Now, he shares those lessons so his children — and young athletes everywhere — can make wiser decisions.
