The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed a murder inquiry is underway and that a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Timeline of Events on August 10
At approximately 10:10 a.m., a man entered St. Patrick’s Church on St. Patrick’s Avenue, struck Canon Murray in the head with a bottle, and fled the scene.
Around two hours later, at 12 p.m., police responded to a report of a deceased man — later identified locally as Stephen Brannigan — at a nearby residence.

District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett confirmed detectives from the Major Investigation Team are leading both inquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector David McBurney described the assault on Canon Murray as “completely shocking and brutal,” urging anyone with information to come forward.

Father Eddie McGee, spokesperson for the Diocese of Down and Connor, said Canon Murray was approached by a man requesting confession before the attack occurred.
