The Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has prohibited the sale of Cooking Gas (LPG) in Ebem market to avert potential deaths and disasters.
The decision followed an emergency meeting of the Council of Chiefs and Elders and was announced in an official communique by the Ebem Ujurueze Palace, Ekeleugo Ebem.
Communique Signed by Community Leaders
The communique was endorsed by key leaders, including:
- Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, Paramount Ruler of Ebem Ohafia
- Emeka Mba, President General of EODU
- Idika Kalu Uche
- Ifeanyi Okali, among others
The statement emphasized that the ban is absolute and immediate.
Crackdown on Cultism, Gangsterism, and Drug Abuse
Community authorities also condemned all forms of cultism, gangsterism, and drug abuse, stating that such activities are strictly prohibited in Ebem.
Parents and guardians were urged to caution their wards, while landlords were directed to evict tenants involved in unlawful practices or face disciplinary measures.
Enforcement Measures
The Chiefs and Elders decreed that:
- Anyone found in illegal possession of arms will be handed over to law enforcement agencies.
- Scrap dealers have been given a two-week quit notice, failing which they will face stringent disciplinary action.
Reason for the Ban
The ban was implemented in response to rising incidents of vandalism and property break-ins in the community.
Security reports link these crimes to the activities of scrap dealers and their suppliers, prompting authorities to take decisive preventive measures.
