Google Messages Is Getting a Game-Changing Group Chat Muting Feature

Google Messages is one step closer to rolling out a long-requested feature — the ability to mute group chats with a snooze-like function.

Thanks to a teardown of the latest beta version by Android Authority, it’s now confirmed that a fully functional version of the snooze tool is hidden inside the app.

While not yet officially live for all users, this discovery suggests the feature may be launching publicly in the near future.

How the Snooze Function Works

The snooze tool will be accessible via the toolbar that appears when users long-press a chat.

Once selected, a second menu will appear offering snooze durations of 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.

Importantly, a note in the UI confirms that “other members will not see that you snoozed this chat,” preserving user privacy.

More Control Through Profile Settings

Beyond quick access through chat options, users will also be able to manage snooze settings through individual chat member profiles.

This includes the ability to silence all notifications except for direct @ mentions — ideal for users who want to stay partially connected.

Why Group Chat Muting Is Essential

Group chats can be incredibly active — and sometimes overwhelming.

From busy work threads to never-ending family conversations, the ability to temporarily mute notifications is crucial for managing focus and digital well-being.

Snoozing allows users to avoid distractions without leaving the conversation entirely.

It’s a flexible way to reduce noise while still allowing for urgent messages to reach you when needed.

No Official Launch Date Yet

As with many beta features, there’s no confirmed date for the public release.

However, the fact that the feature is already working — even if hidden — suggests a rollout may be imminent.

It also comes alongside hints of two other upcoming features currently being tested in Google Messages, although those remain under wraps for now.

Conclusion

While it’s not live yet, the group chat snooze feature is shaping up to be one of the most useful additions to Google Messages in years.

Whether you need a break from constant pings or just want more control over your notifications, this upcoming update looks set to deliver.
