Hong Kong Activist Jimmy Lai Detained, Trump Promises Action

President Donald Trump has promised to do “everything [he] can” to assist Catholic activist Jimmy Lai, who has been jailed for years.

During a radio interview with Fox News, Trump said he would “see what we can do” and confirmed that Lai’s case has already been raised in government discussions.

Background on Jimmy Lai’s Detention

Lai, a prominent free speech and human rights advocate, has been detained by Chinese Communist Party authorities since 2020.

He is nearing the end of a lengthy national security trial in Hong Kong, which began in December 2023 after multiple delays.

The 77-year-old has reportedly experienced heart issues during his imprisonment.

Arrest and Charges

Lai, who converted to Catholicism in 1997, was first arrested in August 2020 under China’s national security law.

Since then, he has faced additional jail sentences related to unlawful assemblies and fraud.

Supporters fear that the trial outcome is predetermined, as the judicial process is tightly controlled by Hong Kong authorities.

Concerns Over Fairness of Trial

Father Robert Sirico, founder of the Michigan-based Acton Institute, expressed skepticism about Lai’s chance of release, highlighting the lack of an impartial jury.

The three judges overseeing the case were selected by Hong Kong’s chief executive, who is influenced by the Chinese Communist Party.

Sirico described the trial as fully “subject to Chinese control,” leaving Lai’s fate entirely in the hands of the appointed judges.

Global Support for Lai

International attention has grown around Lai’s imprisonment.

In 2023, a U.S. congressional commission urged sanctions on Hong Kong prosecutors and judges if Lai was not freed.

Human rights organizations and Catholic leaders worldwide have also called for his release.

Recognition of Lai’s Contributions

Earlier this year, Lai received the Bradley Prize for his dedication to freedom and human rights.

The Catholic University of America displayed his artwork on campus, and a U.S. congressional bill proposes renaming a Washington, D.C., street “Jimmy Lai Way.”

Trump Clarifies His Position

Although Trump did not guarantee Lai’s immediate release, he stated, “I didn’t say 100% I’d save him. I said 100% I’m going to be bringing it up.”

He confirmed that Lai’s case is being actively discussed and commended Lai’s son, Sebastian, for advocating on his father’s behalf.

Advocates Praise Lai’s Courage

Father Sirico noted that Lai’s imprisonment exemplifies courage in the face of oppression.

“He reminds us what it means to live without fear, to speak without permission, and to suffer for the truth,” Sirico said.

Lai’s steadfastness continues to inspire supporters of freedom and human rights globally.
