Growing up, I never saw the appeal of marriage.
I thought it made people complacent in their relationships, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would choose to settle down in that way.
I watched couples stop trying after they got married, taking each other for granted.
I told myself I would never fall into that trap, and marriage was not something I wanted for myself.
Meeting Uriah Changed Everything
Then, I met Uriah while living on Kaua’i, and everything shifted.
I developed a crush on the postman, and after months of gathering the courage to talk to him, I finally left him a note with my phone number in my PO box.
I thought I had been rejected at first, but then he reached out.
After that, we quickly grew close.
In just six months, Uriah proposed, and I knew this relationship was different.
Our Journey Together Started Quickly
After Uriah and I had been dating for a while, we talked about exclusivity as I was preparing to spend six weeks in Europe.
To my surprise, Uriah told me he didn’t want to see other people at all.
He also mentioned that he hadn’t wanted to get married before meeting me, but now he had changed his mind.
At that moment, I knew that I was falling for someone who saw something in me that I hadn’t even seen in myself.
The Moment He Proposed
I had always viewed marriage as an unnecessary step, but Uriah changed my views.
When he proposed to me in a tent in Maui six months after our first date, he had carved me a wooden ring.
He explained that the ring wouldn’t last, but it symbolized his dedication to never becoming complacent in our relationship.
He promised he would always try his best to make me happy, and that promise was something I could never refuse.
Life After Marriage
After we married, we took a big step in life—moving 8,000 miles away from Hawai’i to start a new adventure in Italy.
In a short span of time, we had gone from being two single people living on a small island to being married and starting a new life abroad.
We took risks, quit our jobs, and followed our dreams.
We bought a 325-year-old house in Bosa, Italy, with the plan to open a bed and breakfast.
And through all this change, I now wear my third wooden ring, each one more beautiful than the last.
A Marriage Based on Effort and Devotion
What I once saw as an excuse for complacency has become something entirely different for me.
With Uriah, marriage is a symbol of effort, dedication, and love.
We are not the perfect couple, but we are the perfect match.
We keep trying, keep growing, and keep making each other happy.
And that, to me, is the true meaning of marriage.
