The Kwara State government has announced plans to commence cargo operations at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, aiming to position the state as a hub for agricultural and commercial exports.
Government’s Vision for Trade Expansion
State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Afees Alabi, said the initiative supports Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s efforts to open new export channels, enhance market access, and boost income for producers and businesses.
Facilitating Efficient Movement of Goods
The cargo services will enable smooth transport of products from farms, factories, and workshops to domestic and international markets, supporting value addition, processing, and packaging across multiple sectors.
Reducing Post-Production Losses
Alabi highlighted that the project will minimize post-production losses, preserve product quality, and expand trade opportunities for agricultural, industrial, and processed goods.
Strategic Alternative to Lagos Congestion
With existing congestion at Lagos ports and airports, Ilorin’s airport offers a timely and reliable alternative for exports, enhancing Kwara’s competitiveness in both domestic and global trade.
Infrastructure and Investment Boost
The initiative complements the state’s infrastructure development, including road construction linking rural and industrial areas to major markets, and is expected to transform local products into export-ready consignments and attract investment.
Collaboration Call to Stakeholders
Alabi urged farmers, cooperatives, manufacturers, investors, transport unions, traders, processors, and regulatory agencies to collaborate in ensuring quality, standardized packaging, and technological adoption to meet international market standards.
Modern Cargo Facility Upgrade
Airport Manager Mr. Suraju Aderibigbe revealed that the old terminal building will be upgraded into a modern cargo facility with advanced technology to handle a wide range of products, boosting trade, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth.
Broad Stakeholder Support
The announcement event gathered representatives from the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Immigration Service, NDLEA, University of Ilorin, and other organizations, showcasing widespread support for the transformative initiative.
