Influencer and Carnival Queen Found Dead in Hotel Pool Under Investigation

Luz María Barrera Agatón, a 36-year-old influencer and well-known figure in the bodybuilding community, was tragically found dead at the bottom of a hotel swimming pool in Motul, near Cancun, Mexico.

She had been staying with family and friends at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel when the incident occurred on Sunday morning.

Final Moments at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel

Ms Agatón spent the evening enjoying time with loved ones around the hotel’s cenote-style pool.

Around midnight, the group retired to their rooms, leaving her alone on the premises.

The Mexican had spent the evening chatting with loved ones around the cenote-style pool before they all made their way to bed at around midnight, leaving her alone on the premises

Hours later, concern grew when she had not returned, prompting her family and friends to search for her.

They made the shocking discovery of her body submerged in the pool.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Ongoing Investigation and Possibility of Foul Play

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Ms Agatón’s death and have not ruled out foul play.

Local media reports noted that just two weeks prior to her death, a threatening banner was hung outside her gym in Merida, Yucatán.

According to reports, Ms Agatón removed and destroyed the banner herself without informing the authorities.

Past Threats and Related Incidents

This was not the first time Ms Agatón faced threats.

In 2017, she and her then-partner, Chiri Roberto, a former state prosecutor, were similarly targeted.

Her gym had also been the site of a tragic accident in 2023, where a barbell fell on a young man due to alleged trainer negligence.

Investigators are exploring whether any of these incidents may be connected to her untimely death.

Tribute from the Bodybuilding Community

Ms Agatón was the vice president of the Yucatecan Association of Bodybuilding and Fitness (YAFFEY).

YAFFEY’s president, Evangelina Cimé Mézquita, expressed her sorrow on Facebook, saying: “Sometimes you don’t understand why things happen. We’re going to miss you — your overflowing joy, your simplicity. May God comfort your entire family.”

The YAFFEY social media account shared a heartfelt post stating: “Sometimes there aren’t enough words to express how one feels. See you soon, my friend. I know there’s a party in heaven today.”

Accomplished Career and Legacy

Ms Agatón owned a gym in Merida and was a sponsor of the Bodybuilding Tournament in Motul.

She was crowned Fitness Champion at the 2017 Mister Mexico bodybuilding contest.

Just last year, she was honoured as the queen of the Motul Carnival.

She also achieved victory in the female bikini category at the Mr Olympia Amateur competition held in Spain.

Her sudden passing has left a significant void in the fitness and local community, who remember her for both her achievements and vibrant personality.
