A video circulating on social media revealed Gabela’s difficult living conditions. His modest bedroom, lined with acting accolades, contrasted sharply with an empty fridge containing only water bottles and bare kitchen cupboards.
Actor Appeals for Support
In the viral clip, Gabela explained that he is fighting hardship and desperately seeking financial help. He emphasized that he simply wants to live a life of dignity, not luxury.
Minister McKenzie Steps In
On Thursday, 14 August 2025, McKenzie responded to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who tagged him in the video. The minister expressed sadness at the situation and promised immediate action:
“Thanks, will follow up and revert back today. This is extremely sad.”
Gabela Speaks on Struggles in the Industry
While making his plea, Gabela reflected on the challenges many veteran actors face later in life.
“I want a decent life, to be treated with dignity like every normal person. That’s why I’m reaching out,” he said.
He also voiced concern for young and upcoming actors, urging systemic change in the film industry so they don’t face the same fate.
A Call for Dignity, Not Riches
The veteran actor reiterated that he is not seeking wealth, but rather the ability to live decently and with respect:
“It’s hard for me to ask for help. That’s all I need, just to live decently. I don’t need to be rich.”
