The Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children, and Disabled, Amina S. Abdullahi, has strongly criticised the continuous repatriation of people from Abuja to Kano without proper documentation, coordination, or formal handover.
Practice Described as Dehumanising
In a statement signed by Bintu Nuhu Yakasai, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry, Abdullahi described the act as dehumanising, unlawful, and a violation of human dignity.
Kano’s Hospitality Not to Be Exploited
While acknowledging Kano’s reputation as a hospitable and accommodating state, the Commissioner stressed that the state would not tolerate being used as a “dumping ground” for abandoned persons.
Rights of Citizens Emphasised
Abdullahi questioned why Kano indigenes should be denied the right to live freely in Abuja, noting that many of those sent back are traders, not beggars. She warned that the state’s open-handed nature must not be taken for granted.
Call on Abuja Authorities
She urged the authorities in Abuja to halt the practice immediately, insisting that any repatriation must be conducted in a lawful, coordinated, and dignified manner.
Government to Engage Stakeholders
The Commissioner assured that the Ministry will engage the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to seek a lasting solution. She reaffirmed Kano State’s commitment to protecting the rights of all residents while safeguarding its integrity and capacity to manage its affairs.
