Authorities Deploy Equipment to Manage Snow Buildup
To keep vital transportation routes functional, the province has deployed more than ten motor graders.
These machines are actively clearing snow to prevent accumulation beyond 30 centimeters, which poses serious risks for vehicles.
Duma noted that operators of these graders are receiving emergency-level instruction to ensure quick and effective snow removal.
Their readiness is essential for reopening roads and restoring traffic flow as soon as it is safe to do so.
Road Traffic Teams Manage Blockages and Assist Motorists
The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is working closely with traffic police from Kokstad and Ray Nkonyeni municipalities.
Their joint efforts include managing traffic, redirecting vehicles, and aiding drivers whose vehicles have been immobilized by snow.
Teams are stationed at major junctions and mountain passes to provide support and monitor road conditions in real time.
The operation remains fluid as snow continues to fall across key transport routes.
Snow and Wind Hit Critical Corridors in KwaZulu-Natal
Several of KwaZulu-Natal’s major corridors have been hit hardest by this severe winter storm.
The N2 between Kokstad and Port Shepstone, the N3 from Harrismith to the Tugela Toll, and the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg are among the worst affected.
These roads are considered vital for logistics, public transportation, and emergency services.
Snow accumulation, combined with strong winds and poor visibility, has made travel on these routes extremely dangerous.
Level 6 Weather Warnings in Effect for the Region
The South African Weather Service has issued Level 6 Orange warnings for disruptive snowfall, heavy rainfall and gale-force winds.
These alerts apply across the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal and are expected to remain in place for several days.
In response, emergency meetings are being held to enhance coordination among provincial and municipal leaders.
Duma is scheduled to meet with Ugu District Mayor Skhumbuzo Mqadi and Ray Nkonyeni Mayor Zandile Mzindle to assess ongoing risks.

Authorities have asked the public to avoid traveling to or through Kokstad and surrounding routes.
