KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has won widespread praise after redirecting R44 000 raised for him through a BackaBuddy initiative towards a police charity.
From Cows to Charity
The fundraising campaign was started last month by controversial X personality Chris Excel, intending to buy Mkhwanazi two cows as a gesture of appreciation for his service and anti-corruption stance.
The initiative far exceeded expectations, raising R44 000.
Mkhwanazi’s Statement of Gratitude
In a video posted on social media, Mkhwanazi thanked donors for their generosity but explained that as a civil servant, his monthly salary—funded by taxpayers—was already enough of a reward.
He said he was honoured to serve and protect the people of South Africa in his capacity as a police officer.
Redirecting the Funds
Instead of accepting the money for himself, Mkhwanazi requested that the funds be deposited into the SAPS Educational Trust, which covers the educational costs of children whose parents in the police service died in the line of duty.
He highlighted how the trust has already supported children through to graduation and stressed that it is managed by an independent board of trustees.
Acceptance of Gifts by Police
Although he chose to donate the money, SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Mkhwanazi could have legally accepted it, provided it was declared in the official SAPS gift register.
Praise from Public Figures
Mkhwanazi’s selfless gesture drew admiration from political leaders and ordinary citizens.
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba called him “an amazing man” and a model public servant.
Social media users also commended his ethics, integrity, and embodiment of Ubuntu in action.
Community Reflections on Ubuntu
Many praised the act as an example of community gratitude towards a leader who has shown integrity in a time when trust in authority is scarce.
Others emphasised the importance of supporting the families of officers who died in the line of duty, especially in covering school fees, uniforms, and basic needs.
