A former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. John Obafunwa, has been installed as the Balogun of Ilara Kingdom in Epe, Lagos State.
Ceremony at Ilara Palace
The conferment took place on Saturday at the palace of Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara in Eredo-Epe.
Several other distinguished Nigerians also received traditional titles during the event, including Prof. Kemi Pinheiro and Ambassador Oluwatoyin Lawal.
Monarch Explains Purpose of Chieftaincy Honours
In his address, Oba Ogunsanwo said the titles were conferred to strengthen ties with accomplished indigenes and friends of Ilara, urging them to contribute towards the progress and development of the kingdom.
Obafunwa Promises Service and Development
Prof. Obafunwa, who currently serves as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, expressed gratitude to the monarch and the community.
He pledged to use his experience in academia and leadership to drive growth, youth empowerment, and community development in Ilara.
Balogun Title as a Symbol of Leadership
He described the Balogun title as representing courage, leadership, and responsibility, promising to dedicate his role to upholding communal values and spearheading initiatives that uplift the people.
Dignitaries and Other Title Recipients
The colourful ceremony attracted a large gathering of dignitaries, including academics, politicians, traditional rulers, and business leaders.
Other recipients of chieftaincy titles included Jelili Olayemi, Abiodun Lawal, Dr. Olanrewaju Obasa, Chief Akinyele Oladeji, Toyin Oladeji, Rotimi Edu, and Olayemi Edu.
