As of 2024, the company has achieved a remarkable 90.9% reuse and recycling rate for servers and components, edging past its goal of 90%.
This accomplishment brings Microsoft one step closer to its larger sustainability targets, including becoming carbon negative, water positive, and land positive by 2030.
Achieving Zero-Waste with Circular Centers
In a blog post, Rani Borkar, CVP of Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure, detailed how the company has made significant strides toward a zero-waste future.
The use of Circular Centers, which process and repurpose decommissioned hardware, has been instrumental in this success.
These centers help reduce the company’s reliance on raw materials, making the extraction and reuse of rare earth metals from old hardware more efficient.
The company’s Circular Centers are spread globally, with the first one opening in Amsterdam in 2020.
Since then, more centers have been established in the U.S., Ireland, and Singapore, with plans for new locations in Cardiff, Wales; New South Wales, Australia; and San Antonio, Texas.
Pioneering Rare Earth Metal Extraction
One of the major innovations contributing to Microsoft’s success is the sustainable extraction of rare earth minerals and metals from hard disk drives (HDDs).
This process, which involves the acid-free dissolution of shredded HDDs, has allowed the company to achieve a 90% high-yield recovery rate for valuable materials like neodymium, gold, and copper.
The extraction process has resulted in a 95% reduction in emissions compared to traditional mining, marking a significant step forward in reducing the environmental impact of raw material sourcing.
