Adamu Garba, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned that Nigeria could face collapse in the coming decades if its political and governance systems are not reformed.
He made the statement on his X account on Sunday, warning that the greatest threat to Nigeria’s democracy is what he described as the “industrialization of politics,” where winning elections takes precedence over effective governance.
Political Victories Over Effective Governance
Garba highlighted that while politicians concentrate on electoral success, vital sectors like health and education are neglected and poorly managed.
Hospitals reportedly lack adequate beds, schools face shortages of teachers and classrooms, and inflation is often treated as a political talking point rather than a problem that needs solutions.
Rising Insecurity Exploited Politically
The APC chieftain criticized the government’s approach to insecurity, noting that opposition parties frequently use escalating violence as a political weapon rather than focusing on safeguarding citizens’ lives and property.
Infrastructure and Investment Driven by Politics
Garba pointed out that infrastructure and investment projects are often driven by political interests rather than strategic planning.
He emphasized that these initiatives frequently serve the benefits of political figures instead of addressing the needs of the general population.
Education, Health, and Loans Mismanaged
He observed that Nigeria’s top schools and hospitals are often built by foreign entities, despite massive national budgets allocated to education and health.
Garba also criticized recent loans, including the $300 million from the World Bank, for being used for temporary solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) rather than long-term investments in hospitals and critical infrastructure.
Food Security Crisis
The APC leader drew attention to the state of food security, stating that nearly half of Nigerians cannot afford sufficient daily calories while politicians continue investing abroad.
Flawed System Requires Comprehensive Reform
He stressed that these problems are systemic and not limited to any political party, calling for a full-scale reform of Nigeria’s governance framework.
“The next generation of Nigerians must face the harsh reality and work toward a more honest and efficient system. Otherwise, we may not have a functioning country in the decades ahead,” Garba warned.
