The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern Nigeria has praised the Katsina State Government for approving the recruitment of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) teachers and introducing the subject in public schools.

In a statement, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of Northern CAN, described the initiative as a courageous move towards reviving moral values among young people in the state.
Addressing Long-Standing Neglect
Hayab noted that while providing religious education is a constitutional duty for all governments, such actions have become rare in the region due to years of systematic neglect of Christian education.
Examples from Katsina, Niger, and Borno
The Chairman highlighted Katsina’s decision, along with similar measures taken by the governors of Niger and Borno States, as important steps to ensure children from both Christian and Muslim backgrounds receive moral and religious instruction for a better future.
Commending Governor Radda’s Leadership
CAN commended Governor Dikko Umaru Radda for his leadership, while emphasising that such action should be standard practice for all northern governors. Unfortunately, Christians have often had to fight for this recognition.
Religious Education as a Right, Not a Privilege
Hayab stressed that religious education for all faiths is not an act of generosity but a fundamental right that fosters peace, mutual respect, and moral upbringing. Denying such opportunities, he warned, risks moral decay and social instability.
Moral Education for All Communities
CAN emphasised that children who lack moral instruction may become a threat to the entire society, not just one faith group. Refusing to teach CRS or Islamic Studies in any part of the North, it argued, is a disservice to future generations.
Call for Wider Adoption Across the North
The association urged other northern governors to replicate the examples of Katsina, Niger, and Borno States. It also called on Christian governors to provide Islamic Studies teachers for Muslim pupils in their states.
Promoting Fairness in Faith Education
According to CAN, ensuring equal access to religious education for all faiths will strengthen social harmony and reduce interfaith tensions.
Fostering Peace Through Education
The association concluded that balanced religious education not only shapes morally responsible citizens but also promotes peaceful coexistence across the region.
