A 33-year-old man, Thabo Magwatane, has been sentenced to two life terms plus an additional 45 years by the Mothibistad Regional Court.
He was found guilty of raping, kidnapping, and attempting to murder two female students in Dithakong village, near Mothibistad in the Northern Cape.
The court convicted him on seven charges, including housebreaking with the intent to steal, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of rape, and two counts of attempted murder.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on February 23, 2022.
Magwatane, along with three accomplices, broke into a house where two teenage matric learners, aged 17 and 18, were staying to attend school.
The attackers cut the electricity supply and demanded money and cellphones from the girls.
They stole R100 and two phones before escalating the situation.
The victims were stripped naked, blindfolded, and taken into the bush, wearing only their sandals.
The suspects then raped the girls and attempted to kill them, leaving them in a life-threatening condition.
The victims sustained serious injuries and were deeply traumatized by the ordeal.
Following a detailed investigation, Magwatane was arrested and linked to the crime.
The NPA emphasized that this case was prioritized due to the violent and disturbing nature of the attack.
During the trial, Magwatane showed no remorse, which influenced the court’s decision to impose maximum penalties.
The judge stated that such punishment is necessary to protect society and send a strong message against gender-based violence.
Both survivors are receiving psychological care to support their recovery.
Law enforcement continues to search for Magwatane’s three accomplices, who have not yet been apprehended.
Police are asking members of the public to share any information that might help locate the remaining suspects.
This case has brought renewed attention to the need for better protection for students, especially young women living away from home.
