Orlando Pirates continue their search for a new head coach to succeed Jose Riveiro, the manager who led them to three successful years and five domestic cup victories.
The club is reportedly considering former Mamelodi Sundowns coaches Rulani Mokwena and Pitso Mosimane for the role.
However, this managerial chase has become more competitive as Egyptian football giants Zamalek FC have also expressed interest in both Mosimane and Mokwena, creating a tough contest for the sought-after coaches.
Mokwena Steps Back Out of Respect for Mosimane
Despite being on Orlando Pirates’ radar, Rulani Mokwena has indicated he is unlikely to compete against his mentor Pitso Mosimane for the same coaching position.
Speaking on SuperSport’s Africa Soccer show, Mokwena revealed, “I didn’t hear from them (Zamalek) after I had said I heard that coach Pitso was also in the running for this position.”
He added, “My relationship and my respect for him would not allow me to compete for the same coaching job with coach Pitso.”
Mokwena further explained, “It just wouldn’t sit well with me, so I pulled out. I said I would rather they give it to Pitso.”
Even when his agent highlighted the prestige of the club, Mokwena maintained, “My respect for Pitso and what he has done for my career wouldn’t allow me to do that.”
Player Movements and Contract Situations at Orlando Pirates
The Sea Robbers have confirmed they will release left-back Paseko Mako, who is reportedly close to signing with their fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are said to have offered a contract extension to Hotto, although details about the player’s future remain uncertain.
Monnapule Saleng’s status is also unclear, with the club yet to confirm whether they will retain him.
Saleng’s contract expires at the end of this month, and he appears close to becoming a free agent after a six-month hiatus linked to salary disputes with the club.
The 27-year-old winger has been rumored to have signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs, but this has not been officially confirmed.
