The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Oyo State has raised alarm over alleged plans by Governor Seyi Makinde to secure a fresh loan of N300 billion.
Reports indicate that the Oyo State House of Assembly, under Speaker Debo Ogundoyin, reconvened during recess on August 16 and August 26 to consider the loan request.
In a statement released on Thursday in Ibadan, signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC questioned the transparency and due process surrounding the loan approval.
The opposition party warned that continuous borrowing could harm the state’s economy and affect citizens’ welfare if not properly managed.
It further alleged that the decision was taken without adequately briefing its four lawmakers in the Assembly.
Sadare added that the APC might mobilize residents for a peaceful protest if the “unabated borrowing” continues without clear justification.
According to the APC, this would be the third major loan in 2025 alone, following N200 billion in March and N110 billion in July.
The party compared Oyo with Imo State, where Governor Hope Uzodimma recently raised workers’ minimum wage to N104,000, attributing it to better financial management.
It criticized Governor Makinde’s administration for failing to deliver significant improvements in citizens’ daily lives despite having access to huge resources since 2019.
The APC urged the Oyo Assembly leadership to act responsibly, stressing that excessive borrowing could burden citizens before and after May 2027.
Residents were, however, urged to remain calm as the APC promised to keep raising concerns that affect governance in the state.
