A woman from Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, attempted suicide on Monday, 11 August 2025, after a loan shark unexpectedly raised her interest rate from 50% to 400%.
The demand escalated her debt from R20 000 to R100 000.
Interest Rate Raised When Loan Nearly Settled
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman’s family said the loan shark increased the interest rate after noticing the debt was almost fully repaid.
When she refused to pay the inflated amount, the lender allegedly threatened to send men to repossess her car.
Escalating Debt and Threats
Out of fear, the woman borrowed smaller sums from other sources to make partial payments as the loan shark continued to demand more money.
The pressure and intimidation reportedly left her feeling trapped.
Suicide Attempt and Plea to Family
She eventually called relatives to say she planned to jump off a bridge because she could no longer cope with the debt.
She also asked her family to care for her child.
RUSA Steps In
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram confirmed that the woman’s family was advised on steps to get her help and address the situation.
Knife Attack and Robbery Attempt in Verulam
In a separate incident on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, a 36-year-old man was arrested in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, for attacking a family with a knife during a robbery attempt.
The suspect entered a property on Aslaam Road in Riyadh intending to steal valuables.
Elderly Woman and Worker Targeted
Two family members were drinking tea in the yard when the suspect approached.
The 78-year-old woman and her male domestic worker fled into the house, pursued by the suspect.
Confrontation and Injury
Inside the home, the robber tried to steal a metal statue but was confronted by a 54-year-old man who emerged from a bedroom.
The suspect stabbed the man in the hand before fleeing empty-handed.
Suspect Captured in Russom Street
Police later apprehended the suspect on Russom Street, ending the short-lived escape.
Community Concerns Over Safety and Lending Practices
The two incidents have sparked community discussions about loan shark exploitation and violent crime in the region.
