The Jos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) carried out a field assessment of communities in Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State, affected by recent floods and a destructive windstorm.
The disaster reportedly destroyed over 50 houses and washed away several hectares of rice farms, leaving residents without essential livelihoods.
Villages Affected
The NEMA team, led by Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mrs. Judith Bai, visited the villages of Shimankar, Kalong, Anguwan Dadi, Unguwan Yargam, Wali, Gisa, and Unguwan Zam to assess the extent of the damage.
Community Leaders Seek Assistance
During the visit, the Village Head of Shimankar, HRH Miskoom Maurice M. Danjuma, expressed deep concern over the impact on residents and their sources of livelihood.
He called on NEMA, as well as the state and federal governments, to provide urgent support to help the communities recover.
Local Government Commends NEMA
Chris Nettiem, Secretary of Shendam Local Government, representing Chairman Kemi Nicholas Nshe, commended NEMA for its swift response to the disaster.
He assured that the local council remains committed to collaborating with NEMA to address the needs of the affected populations.
Collaborative Assessment
The assessment was conducted in collaboration with Shendam LGA officials and the Local Government Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) to ensure a thorough evaluation of the flood-ravaged areas.
