Public Warned to Stay Out of the Ocean in Hout Bay Due to Shark Risk

Authorities have issued a strong warning urging the public to avoid entering the ocean in and around Hout Bay.

This follows the discovery and towing of a decomposing whale carcass that is increasing the risk of shark activity in the area.

The carcass, which is missing both its head and tail, was pulled into Hout Bay Harbor on Wednesday, June 18.

Its internal organs are spilling into the water, a situation known to attract sharks due to the scent of blood and tissue.

Officials recommend staying out of the ocean for the next few days while the situation is managed.

Whale Carcass Creates Shark-Friendly Conditions

The whale carcass is believed to be contributing to an increase in shark presence near Hout Bay.

Because it has no head or tail and its guts are exposed, it releases fluids and tissue into the water.

This environment is extremely attractive to large predators, especially sharks, who are drawn by the scent.

As a result, marine safety officials have heightened surveillance and public advisories along nearby beaches.

Carcass Removal and Safety Measures

The towing of the whale was carried out by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

According to the latest updates, the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is responsible for disposing of the remains.

Until the carcass is fully removed, the area will remain under a shark activity watch.

Officials have emphasized the importance of avoiding water-based activities during this period.

Lifeguards and rescue teams are also on alert to respond to any emergency that might arise.

Community and Tourist Safety Encouraged

Local residents and visitors are asked to comply with safety advisories during this high-risk period.

Avoiding the ocean could prevent unnecessary shark encounters and help rescue teams focus on monitoring.

Hout Bay is a popular location for recreational water activities, making the warning especially important.

Safety authorities are also asking beachgoers to report any shark sightings or marine incidents immediately.
