South Africa motorists may enjoy fuel price drop in September 2025

South African motorists could soon get relief at the pumps early next month.

According to the latest projections, both petrol and diesel prices are expected to drop if current market conditions remain stable over the next three weeks.

Factors Behind the Projected Price Drop

The recent strengthening of the rand against the dollar, combined with a fall in Brent crude oil prices, has created favorable conditions for a fuel price decrease.

Data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Monday, 11 August, supports these projections.

Expected Price Changes

  • Petrol 93: decrease of 12 cents
  • Petrol 95: decrease of 6 cents
  • Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 10 cents
  • Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 12 cents
  • Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 8 cents

If these conditions persist, motorists using 93 octane petrol could save 12 cents per litre, while those using 95 octane would see a 6-cent drop.

Diesel users may enjoy reductions between 10 and 12 cents per litre, and illuminating paraffin is projected to drop by 8 cents.

Two Main Factors Driving South Africa’s Fuel Prices

  1. The international price of petroleum products, mainly influenced by oil prices.
  2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used when purchasing these products.

Current Market Indicators

At the time of reporting:

  • Brent crude oil price: $66.85 per barrel
  • Rand/dollar exchange rate: R17.70/$
