South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that 21 parks nationwide will offer free entry to day visitors during the 20th annual SA National Parks Week, running from 22 to 26 September 2025, with an extended weekend at selected parks on 27 and 28 September.
The celebration will officially kick off with a launch event on 21 September at Kruger National Park.
Purpose of SA National Parks Week
Launched in 2006, the initiative aims to promote national pride, showcase South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage, and raise public awareness about conservation efforts.
SANParks described the event as a successful campaign that educates the public on inclusive conservation strategies.
Featured Parks in the Frontier Region
Four of the most popular parks in the Frontier Region are participating:
- Addo Elephant National Park
- Karoo National Park
- Camdeboo National Park
- Mountain Zebra National Park
While entry is free, visitors must note that accommodation, guided tours, and other paid activities are not included.
Increased Public Engagement
Since its inception, National Parks Week has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors, many of whom might not usually afford park entry.
SANParks hopes that the 20th anniversary will attract a record number of participants across all provinces.
Visitors are advised to arrive early, as parks are expected to experience high traffic during free-access days.
