South African off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been ruled out of the second one-day international (ODI) against Australia after being reported for a suspect bowling action.
The 31-year-old made his 50-over debut in South Africa’s 98-run victory in the first ODI at Cairns, taking 1-46, including the important wicket of Travis Head.
ICC Assessment Pending
Concerns were raised about the legality of his bowling action in the match officials’ report.
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Subrayen will undergo an independent assessment at an ICC-accredited testing facility.
- Under cricket regulations, a bowler may flex their arm up to 15 degrees; any more is considered illegal.
South Africa’s Plan for Subrayen
While awaiting his assessment, Subrayen remains available for selection, but coach Shukri Conrad decided he will sit out the second ODI in Mackay on Friday.
Conrad explained:
“We just felt, together with ‘Subs’, that less noise, get him away and out of the public eye, and just make sure that he’s okay. That’s why his name’s not going to be on the teamsheet tomorrow. We will obviously rally around him and make sure that he’s in the best space.”
Another Setback for the Proteas
South Africa is already without injured pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, making Subrayen’s absence a further challenge for the team.
Meanwhile, Australia spinner Adam Zampa escaped with one demerit point for breaching the ICC code of conduct after swearing on a stump microphone during the same match.
