The Diocese of Syracuse, New York, announced on August 9, 2025, that Bishop Douglas J. Lucia has assumed the additional role of parish priest for three churches in Baldwinsville.
The appointments, effective August 1, place him as pastor of St. Augustine Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, and St. Mary of the Assumption Church, which operate as a single parish with shared resources.
Transition Following Pastor’s Reassignment
The change follows the reassignment of former pastor Father Joe O’Connor, who has been appointed to seminary work.
In a letter to parishioners, Bishop Lucia acknowledged the community’s questions about leadership and confirmed, “I will be your new pastor.”
He noted that while he became bishop six years ago, he always hoped to remain active as a parish priest — a wish he now sees fulfilled.
Maintaining Clergy Support
While Bishop Lucia takes over as pastor, Father Benjamin Schrantz will continue serving as parochial vicar, and retired Father Thomas Ryan will remain available for sacramental assistance.
The diocese cited the need to address both pastoral and financial realities in the Baldwinsville area as part of the decision.
New Mass Schedule for the Parish
In consultation with parish deacons, trustees, and pastoral council leaders, Bishop Lucia has created a revised Mass schedule, set to begin at the end of August.
The plan ensures no more than two priests are required for Sunday Mass celebrations each weekend.
Lucia stressed the importance of balancing clergy workloads while safeguarding their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Broader Pastoral Planning Goals
Bishop Lucia emphasized that diocesan planning must create sustainable lifestyles for clergy and staff while ensuring faithful service to both urban and rural communities.
The diocese’s seven counties are home to nearly 200,000 Catholics, all under Lucia’s pastoral care.
A History of Dual Service
Serving in multiple capacities is not new for Bishop Lucia.
Ordained in 1989, he has previously managed simultaneous pastoral and administrative duties in northern New York and Canada.
In 2006, he served as both chancellor and episcopal vicar for the Diocese of Ogdensburg, and he has pastored multiple churches while carrying other diocesan responsibilities.
Commitment to Serving Multiple Roles
Bishop Lucia will continue leading the Diocese of Syracuse while now directly shepherding the Baldwinsville parish community, reflecting his commitment to hands-on pastoral ministry.
