Instagram has launched a new Map feature for U.S. users that lets you share your location with friends in real-time.
This addition, which debuted Wednesday, works similarly to Snap Maps and can be accessed through the Messages tab in the app.
How the New Map Feature Works
The tool shows tagged locations of friends and creators you follow, but only if they have chosen to share their location — an option that is off by default.
Posts linked to specific places will also appear on the map for those who opt in.
Privacy and Safety Concerns Arise
While the feature offers fun and convenience, it also raises worries about privacy and safety.
Location sharing can provide advertisers with detailed insights into users’ movements and habits.
More worryingly, it can be misused by individuals for stalking or digital abuse.
Instagram has implemented privacy controls to address these concerns.
Location Sharing Is Optional and Off by Default
Instagram introduced location sharing in direct messages back in November 2024, and this new feature builds on that.
Meta confirms location sharing is off by default and only updates your position when you open the app or return to it after running in the background.
Customizing Who Sees Your Location
You can control who you share your location with — options include friends, followers you follow back, Close Friends, selected individuals, or no one at all.
Importantly, you can only share your location with accounts you follow, and you can exclude specific people.
How Location Sharing Functions with Instagram Maps
There has been confusion about whether the Map shows live location sharing or only tagged locations.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, clarified that most map activity comes from people tagging stories or posts with locations, which can be mistaken for live sharing.
Mosseri promised clearer explanations and improvements soon.
Viewing Location on the Map
If location sharing is on, people with permission can see your live location in chats or through tagged posts on the Map.
You can also view posts from others who share their locations with you.
Tapping a person’s icon allows you to send them a direct message.
Visual Indicators for Location Sharing Status
Instagram uses different icons on the Map to show your location sharing status:
- Blue arrow: You’re sharing your location with selected users.
- Red dot: You’re not sharing your location.
- Orange triangle: Location permissions need enabling on your device.
How to Turn Off Location Sharing on Instagram
To stop sharing your location, open the Instagram app, go to Messages, tap the Map, access Settings, adjust your preferences, and update them.
This process takes just a couple of minutes and is available only in the app, not desktop.
Parental Controls for Teens’ Location Sharing
Meta allows parents to manage whether their teens can share their location on Instagram and who they share it with.
Parents receive notifications if their child enables location sharing, helping keep young users safe.
