US: AMD FSR 4 records slower frame rates than FSR 3 in SDK benchmarks

New tests on AMD’s FidelityFX SDK 2.0 reveal that FSR 4 runs slightly slower than FSR 3.

The benchmark, conducted on a Radeon RX 9070 XT, showed that FSR 3.1.5 reached 290 fps while FSR 4.0.2 achieved 276 fps, a 5% performance drop.


Increased GPU Usage with AI Integration

FSR 4 consumes around 37% more GPU resources than its predecessor.

This spike in hardware demand is linked to its use of AI and machine learning models to enhance visual output.


Visual Enhancements Compensate for Slower Speed

Despite the reduced frame rates, FSR 4 offers stronger image clarity and sharper details.

While it still falls behind Nvidia DLSS 4, it already surpasses DLSS 3 in terms of visual quality.


Impact on RDNA 4 and Weaker Systems

For top-tier GPUs, the performance loss is minor.

However, users with weaker RDNA 4 cards or those playing highly demanding games may feel the drop more strongly.


Future of FSR 4 Beyond RDNA 4

Currently, FSR 4 is limited to RDNA 4 GPUs.

If AMD successfully backports the technology to older GPUs, it could expand its reach and compete more effectively with Nvidia’s DLSS across various platforms, including handheld gaming devices.
