Vatican City – Pope Leo XIV Urges Catholics to Invest Life’s Treasure in Service

During his Angelus address on Aug. 10, 2025, Pope Leo XIV urged the faithful to consider how they are investing the “treasure” that is their life.

He encouraged believers to go beyond sharing material possessions, inviting them to also give their time, skills, and compassion for the good of others.

Gospel of Luke Inspires Call to Generosity

Drawing from Luke 12:32-48, the pope highlighted that love and generosity are the keys to true fulfillment.

He stressed that these gifts must be actively cultivated and put at the service of others rather than stored away or misused.

Extending Charity Beyond Finances

Quoting Jesus’ command to “sell your possessions and give alms,” Pope Leo explained that Christian giving involves far more than financial donations.

It includes offering presence, love, and talents to those in greatest need.

Gifts Must Be Invested, Not Wasted

The pope reminded the faithful that everything in God’s plan makes each person “a priceless and unrepeatable good.”

If these gifts are not nurtured and used for good, they risk withering and losing their value.

Lessons from St. Augustine and St. John Paul II

Referencing St. Augustine, Pope Leo said that what is given to others is transformed into eternal life, not earthly wealth.

He also cited St. John Paul II’s teaching that acts of mercy bring deep spiritual transformation.

Works of Mercy as the Safest Investment

Using the example of the poor widow from Mark’s Gospel, the pontiff described works of mercy as “the most secure and profitable bank” for storing life’s true treasures.

Encouraging Daily Vigilance

Pope Leo stressed the importance of being watchful and attentive in everyday settings — whether at home, school, parish, or work.

He urged believers to develop a habit of sensitivity and readiness to serve one another.

Mary as a Guide for Peace and Mercy

Concluding his address, the pope invoked Mary, the Morning Star, to guide the Church in her mission of promoting mercy and peace in a world marked by division.
