Pope Leo XIV addressed pilgrims during his Wednesday general audience on August 13, 2025, at the Paul VI Audience Hall in Vatican City.
He emphasized that the Gospel does not teach denial of evil, but encourages recognizing it as an opportunity for personal conversion and spiritual growth.
Due to extreme heat, the pope also greeted pilgrims in nearby locations who could not fit inside the hall.
Reflection on the Last Supper
Continuing his jubilee catechesis on “Jesus Christ Our Hope,” Pope Leo XIV reflected on the Last Supper as recounted in St. Mark’s Gospel.
He noted that while Jesus did not raise his voice or point fingers at Judas, he used strong words to convey the seriousness of betrayal.
“Jesus does not speak to humiliate,” the pope said. “He speaks the truth because he wishes to save.”
Truth as a Path to Salvation
Pope Leo XIV highlighted that Jesus’ words aim to help disciples understand their weaknesses and embrace the journey of salvation.
He stressed that salvation requires acknowledging one’s involvement in sin while trusting in God’s love.
“The Gospel asks us to recognize evil as a painful opportunity for rebirth,” the pope added.
Hope Amid Human Weakness
The pope reminded listeners that Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection offer hope even when faced with personal sins or fragility.
“At the darkest points, the light is not extinguished,” he said. “It begins to shine.”
Recognizing limits and embracing Christ’s suffering allows believers to experience renewal and rebirth.
Opening Hearts to Truth
Toward the end of the catechesis, Pope Leo XIV encouraged Christians to create space for truth in their hearts and trust in Jesus’ enduring love.
He emphasized that even when humans fail or betray God, divine love remains steadfast.
“Salvation begins with the awareness that we may falter, but we can also renew our trust in God,” he said.
