Pope Leo XIV has decreed that the Pontifical Committee for World Children’s Day will now operate under the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life.
The dicastery is currently led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell.
The decision was announced in a rescript by the Holy See Press Office on August 13, 2025, following a meeting on August 6 with Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, substitute for general affairs of the Vatican Secretariat of State.
Origins of World Children’s Day
World Children’s Day was first established by Pope Francis on December 8, 2023.
Initially, the celebration was organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education and marked globally on May 25–26, 2024.
On May 25, 2024, thousands of children from 77 countries gathered at Rome’s Olympic Stadium to meet Pope Francis, share testimonies, and ask questions.
Establishment of the Pontifical Committee
In November 2024, Pope Francis created the Pontifical Committee for World Children’s Day.
Father Enzo Fortunato was appointed as its president. He also serves as communications director for St. Peter’s Basilica and head of the press office of St. Francis of Assisi Basilica.
The committee is tasked with organizing and guiding the celebration of World Children’s Day worldwide.
Next Celebration Scheduled
The next World Children’s Day will be held in Rome in September 2026, continuing the tradition of gathering children globally to share their experiences and engage with the Church.
