Kevin Lara, originally from Caracas and raised on Margarita Island, Venezuela, moved to the United States in 2010 at the age of 17.
Last week, he announced on X that he and his wife were returning to the Catholic Church after 16 years as Protestants.
His post quickly went viral, amassing over 260,000 views and 10,000 likes, where he expressed love for his Protestant community and described the journey as long, painful, but ultimately fulfilling.
Early Life and Protestant Journey
Lara was baptized Catholic as a child and made his first Communion, but his early faith was largely cultural.
He later encountered Protestant teachings through a cousin visiting from the United States, which led him to embrace Reformed Baptist Christianity.
After moving to Florida, Lara became active in his Protestant community and even pursued seminary studies to become a pastor, though he never completed that step.
During this time, he met Patricia, who would later become his wife, and they now have three daughters.
Growing Curiosity About Catholicism
While in seminary, Lara began to see Catholicism from a more ecumenical perspective, influenced by a professor who encouraged him to appreciate the Catholic liturgy.
He realized that the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist was central to Catholic faith and unmatched in Protestant practice.
Studying the Church Fathers, including St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Irenaeus, Lara understood that Catholic tradition has maintained continuity from the early Church.
Conversion Challenges and Family Journey
Lara admitted that pride initially prevented him from acknowledging he was wrong, and converting meant a profound change of identity and letting go of deeply held Protestant convictions.
He also worried about the reactions of friends and family within the Protestant community.
Through persistent prayer, both he and his wife Patricia embraced Catholicism together, and the family now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
First Mass and Inspiration from Saints
Lara remembers his first Mass vividly, identifying with St. Peter’s struggles and recognizing Christ’s call to trust Him.
He found inspiration in the lives of Catholic saints, which he felt surpassed the examples of his Protestant heroes.
Advice for Dialogue Between Faiths
Lara urges Catholics to engage with Protestants patiently and lovingly, emphasizing friendship and respect rather than pride.
He believes that both communities can learn from one another and share the beauty of Christ’s teachings, fostering dialogue and understanding.
