When my husband retired from the Navy in our mid-40s, we were at a crossroads. Most of his colleagues and friends were downsizing to prepare for quieter “empty nest” years. But with two preschoolers at home, our lives were getting busier, not calmer. Instead of scaling down, we decided to purchase a bigger home.
Planning Ahead for Family and Future
Many questioned our choice: “Isn’t that too much house?” or “Won’t you downsize in 10 years?” But we saw it differently. My husband was starting a second career as a teacher, and I worked from home. We wanted space to grow, entertain, garden, and still enjoy privacy. With so many young adults living at home today, we thought it made sense to plan ahead.
The Year-Long Search for the Right Home
It wasn’t an overnight decision. We spent a year exploring neighborhoods, school districts, and healthcare access. We considered features like a first-floor primary bedroom and laundry for aging in place. After touring countless homes across three states, we finally found one that met all our needs.
A Home That Grew With Us
Fast-forward 10 years: our sons are now 13 and 15. The house that once seemed too big now feels just right. With their rooms upstairs, they have space to spread out, while my husband and I enjoy peace and quiet when needed. During the pandemic, we often said, “I’m so glad we bought this house.” The extra space gave everyone a retreat.
Building Stability for Our Kids
This home is only our children’s second, and it has become their anchor. During my husband’s Navy career, moving was part of life. Now, permanence gives our boys stability and gives us comfort.
The Tradeoffs of a Larger Home
Of course, a bigger home means higher utility bills and more cleaning. Some days the space feels excessive. We occasionally wonder if downsizing will make sense after the boys leave for college.
No Rush to Leave
Still, knowing we can offer our kids a place to return — whether between jobs or while saving money — makes us want to stay. And when the time comes, we’ll still have a house that suits us until the next chapter begins.
