The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has temporarily halted arrests of vandals targeting power facilities.
The move is part of a broader initiative to educate communities on the dangers and consequences of such illegal activities.
Engr. Charles Iwuamadi, General Manager of TCN’s Benin Region, shared this during a sensitization program in Umelu community, Edo State.
Public Awareness on Illegal Activities
Iwuamadi highlighted that the company is raising awareness about the health hazards of erecting structures under high-tension transmission lines.
He emphasized that demolitions of marked structures remain a last resort, with community engagement taking priority over punitive measures.
Strategic Approach to Prevent Vandalism
“Instead of arresting suspects immediately, we are currently adopting a sensitization strategy,” Iwuamadi said.
He explained that proper public information ensures residents understand the implications of vandalism and encroachment, aligning community cooperation with TCN’s objectives.
Impact of Vandalism on the National Grid
The TCN General Manager noted that vandalism is a major contributor to frequent national grid collapses.
In the past five years, such acts have increased by over 30 percent, and without TCN’s management, outages would have been more frequent.
Health and Safety Risks
Iwuamadi warned that building under transmission towers exposes residents to high radiation, serious health hazards, and even instant death if lines collapse.
He described transmission lines as national assets critical to moving electricity across the country.
Community Cooperation and Support
TCN commended the Umelu community for maintaining peace along the 131-kilometre Benin–Onitsha transmission line.
Residents also requested the company to assist in upgrading facilities, maintain cleared right-of-ways, and enhance security surveillance.
Role of NSCDC
Deputy Commandant Suleiman Mohammed of the Edo State NSCDC reinforced that communities must protect government infrastructure.
He warned that vandalism diverts funds meant for development and could reduce future government investments in high-risk areas.
Nationwide Sensitization Campaign
The program in Umelu is part of TCN’s national effort to reduce vandalism, protect the national grid, and ensure consistent electricity supply.
Iwuamadi assured that ongoing community collaboration remains essential to achieving these goals.
