Johannesburg pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray went missing on Thursday after his plane crashed into the ocean near Battery Beach.
He was performing his final aerial display at the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit 2025, hosted at Virginia Airport, when beachgoers witnessed the fatal crash.
Search and Recovery Operations
Police divers and specialized recovery teams are still searching for the 61-year-old’s body.
While wreckage from the aircraft has been recovered, poor weather conditions have delayed full-scale search efforts.
Despite challenges, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed that advanced search technology is being deployed.
NSRI Responds to Reports
NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon dismissed claims that bad weather had significantly hindered the operation.
He appealed to the public and maritime community to report any debris found along the coast that may be linked to the crash.
Tributes Flood Social Media
The aviation community and friends of Andrew Blackwood-Murray have expressed deep sorrow at his loss.
Facebook has been filled with condolence messages from colleagues and loved ones, describing him as a true gentleman and passionate aviator.
Venessa Richardson, a close friend, wrote: “Gonna miss you. A gentleman, an amazing pilot. Andrew was always willing to chat, no matter how busy he was. He will certainly leave a gap in the airshow display calendar.”
Another friend, Ryan Douwie, shared: “My heart bleeds Andrew. You were such a gentleman. I’m glad I had the pleasure of sharing a classroom with you as part of the Airways April intake.”
Calls for Closure
Many tributes included prayers for his recovery to give the family closure.
Fazila Naidoo, among others, expressed hope that his body would be found soon, allowing loved ones to grieve properly.
