A senior Boko Haram commander, Ibrahim Bakoura, also known as Abu Oumaima, has dismissed reports claiming he was killed during recent air strikes in Niger Republic.
Bakoura insisted he survived the operations despite official announcements declaring him dead.
Niger Republic Announces Bakoura’s Death
Earlier this week, Niger Republic’s government reported that Bakoura was among several insurgent leaders killed.
The statement revealed that the country’s armed forces carried out precision strikes on August 15 targeting Boko Haram strongholds in Korongol, Kournawa, and Shilawa, all located in the Diffa region.
Heavy Losses Recorded in Boko Haram Strongholds
According to the military, the operation destroyed major logistics hubs and killed several fighters.
Niger’s Head of State, Abdurahamane Tiani, had also identified Bakoura as one of the leading figures allegedly working to destabilize the country.
Bakoura Denies Reports in Intercepted Message
However, security sources intercepted a communication in which Bakoura rejected claims of his death.
A counter-insurgency outlet, Zagazola Makama, reported that Bakoura told his commanders he read about his “death” on social media, but stressed he was not among those killed.

Despite Bakoura’s denial, Niger Republic continues to face major threats from insurgent groups.
The country remains a crucial frontline state in the regional fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad basin.
