Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has rejected suggestions that former President Goodluck Jonathan should return in 2027.
He stressed that Nigeria’s challenges go far beyond any single leader.
Structural Problems Over Personnel Changes
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Farotimi said that changing leaders without addressing the country’s structural issues would not produce meaningful results.
He stated:
“A thousand Goodluck Ebele Jonathans cannot solve the problems of Nigeria. If we do not address our structural problems and tell ourselves the truth, nothing is going to change.”
Jonathan’s Political Rebranding
Farotimi recalled that Jonathan faced heavy criticism and was voted out in 2015, yet political actors are now attempting to rebrand him as a saviour.
He argued that this move serves the interests of the political class, not ordinary Nigerians.
Focus on Systems, Not Individuals
The activist urged Nigerians to demand strengthened institutions and systems rather than relying on recycled politicians.
He asked:
“If we’re talking about change in 2027, what does it mean in education? What does it mean for security, agriculture, telecoms, or the structure of the country?”
Call for Systemic Reforms
Farotimi concluded that true progress requires systemic reforms.
He stressed that Nigerians should shift focus from past leaders to building resilient institutions capable of delivering sustainable development.
