Ogun NITP partners with state government, polytechnic to tackle infrastructure issues

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) in Ogun State has committed to strengthening collaborations with the state government and the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.

The goal is to tackle infrastructure challenges resulting from rapid population growth and industrialisation in certain parts of the state.

Population Growth and Industrial Pressure

State chairman, TPL Adefela Sogbesan, highlighted that communities such as Ilaro and Ibese in Yewa South Local Government Area are experiencing population surges without adequate infrastructure.

He linked this growth to the presence of major industries, which have turned the area into a bustling industrial corridor.

Sogbesan said, “It is evident that our communities are experiencing a population boom without commensurate infrastructure to support it. The implications for housing, transportation, drainage, education, and healthcare are alarming.”

Engagement with Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro

During the institute’s August monthly general meeting in Ilaro, NITP paid a courtesy visit to the Federal Polytechnic.

They were received by the Deputy Rector (Administration), TPL Lukman Lasisi, who emphasized that town planning should foster livable environments balancing residential, commercial, and educational needs.

Lasisi also requested the institute’s assistance in resolving a blocked culvert near the campus that causes flooding during rains.

Emphasis on Modern Urban Planning

Sogbesan stressed that contemporary town planning integrates climate science, data analytics, infrastructure finance, and urban governance.

He highlighted the importance of collaborative research and projects focused on sustainable urbanism.

Collaboration with Yewa South Local Government

The NITP team also met with Yewa South Local Government Chairman, Abraham Ogunsola, to align physical planning initiatives with the council’s development agenda.

Ogunsola pledged his administration’s commitment to creating a livable environment, noting that sustainable infrastructure is essential to support the area’s rapidly growing population.
